Can The Government Bring Peace?

Christmas brings hope for a just government, where peace and justice always prevail - is it really possible?

It’s Christmas and government really is the solution... that is, if Jesus is your King.

A former President of the United States famously said, “Government is like a baby... a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other.” - Ronald Reagan

Although Reagan’s assessment was amusing, it isn’t all that hard to find historical examples of government helping to bring about some good. On the other hand, it doesn’t take much work at all to find examples of government behaving badly.

Shouldn’t we always be able to trust that our government will look out for our best interest? The truth is, human government will always fall short. But Christmas brings us the hope of a just government, where peace and justice always prevail and where all of our needs are graciously met. The Bible tells of a time when Jesus will rule and his followers will enjoy all the benefits of his love, his grace and his goodness.

Looking forward to Jesus’ birth on that first Christmas day, ancient scripture as recorded in the Bible states:

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6

Sound too good to be true? It shouldn’t. Jesus proved his character to us by the life he led. You can read about it in the Gospels. One of his close followers, Peter, put it like this:

“God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.” Acts 10:38

The Bible teaches that Jesus will return as a King and his followers will enjoy life everlasting in his presence and in his wonderful kingdom. The Bible puts it this way:

“Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever." Isaiah 9:7
