Jesus believed in prayer, spent a lot of time in prayer, and encouraged his followers to pray. Jesus offers us access to God - and prayer is an important part of that access. Find a place to pray and experience the power of prayer!
“The cleansing of the Temple” is a very well known Bible story. You can find it in Mark’s Gospel (Chapter 11, verses 15 - 17). While it’s an exciting story, and most people enjoy a good action story, some people feel that Jesus’ behavior was somewhat out of character. Why would he get so upset? Did he really have to toss over tables and drive out the profiteers?
What did Jesus have to say about it? “Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves.” Interesting explanation. It tells us quite a bit about Jesus frame of mind. For starters, Jesus took scripture seriously. Jesus also took prayer seriously.
Jesus believed in prayer. He spent a lot of time in prayer. He encouraged his followers to pray. He spoke about the power of prayer.
Jesus offers us access to God - prayer is an important part of that access. Who does Jesus want that access for? He wants it for “all nations.” In other words, he wants it for everyone; he wants it for you! What could be more inclusive than that?
So think about it. It was on a Monday, only four days from the brutal experience of the cross. Jesus knew exactly what was coming; he knew the great suffering he was about to endure. But he made it a point to “cleanse the temple,” thereby providing a vivid, powerful illustration of his determination to remove the obstacles that keep us from reaching out to God.
Reach out to the Father in prayer, seek His guidance and enjoy the access Jesus has provided.
Dear Father, thank you for sending your son, Jesus. Thank you that Jesus, the Servant King, made it a point to emphasize the importance of prayer. Even though he was facing the extreme suffering of the cross, he went out of his way to help me understand that prayer is important. I am thankful for that and I don’t want to take it for granted. I believe in Jesus' power to remove the obstacles that keep me from you. Now help me develop the discipline to pray. Help me to experience the blessings that come from prayer. Guide my thoughts and guide my paths so that I can have a wonderful relationship with you. Amen
